Elbert Hubbard’s great principles for life

I am currently reading ‘How to win friends and influence people’, by Dale Carnegie. I can’t wait to do its book review because it is definitely not what I thought it would be.

Meanwhile, I’d like to leave you with this passage from the book which I found profound, inspiring, and highly applicable. It was originally written by Elbert Hubbard, essayist and publisher.

Whenever you go out-of-doors, draw the chin in, carry the crown of the head high, and fill the lungs to the utmost; drink in the sunshine; greet your friends with a smile, and put soul into every handclasp.

Do not fear being misunderstood and do not waste a minute thinking about your enemies. Try to fix firmly in your mind what you would like to do; and then, without veering off direction, you will move straight to the goal.

Keep your mind on the great and splendid things you would like to do, ad then, as the days go gliding away, you will find yourself unconsciously seizing upon the opportunities that are required for the fulfillment of your desire, just as the coral insect takes from the running tide the element it needs.

Picture in your mind the able, earnest, useful person you desire to be, and the thought you hold is hourly transforming you into that particular person… Thought is supreme.

Preserve a right mental attitude – the attitude of courage, frankness and good cheer. To think rightly is to create. All things come through desire and every sincere prayer is answered. We become like that which our hearts are fixed.

Carry your chin in and the crown of your head high. We are gods in the chrysalis.

Mindful walking and cultivating loving kindness

This practice has been adapted from a meditation course on the app Insight Timer. The course was ‘Letting go of negative judgement and self criticism’ by Stephanie Nash. I highly recommend this course if you have or are thinking about getting the paid for version of Insight Timer (no affiliation here).

This practice, I find, also aligns with Robin Sharma’s personal utopia principle in ‘The 5 am Club’.

The exercise needs to be done either whilst on a walk outside or whilst people-watching, I recommend doing it whilst alone to channel your focus and attention.

The practice

As you go for your daily walk or are people-watching, perhaps sat on a bench, silently wish all the people and animals you pass or see loving kindness.

Internally say ‘I wish you well’ and send them some positive energy coming deep from inside.

Why?

It may sound a little bonkers but this simple practice has the potential to do so much.

  • It promotes mindfulness and in-the-present thinking
  • It causes you to pay attention to what’s around you and appreciate people and animals, their existence, their differences and their struggles
  • It allows you to cultivate a loving kindness towards others and experience more compassion
  • It sends out positive energy to the universe, a form of giving, vibrating at a higher frequency and manifest positivity in your life.
  • It allows you to see the bigger picture outside of yourself
  • It makes you feel more positive towards yourself and other people

In conclusion

For me, the biggest effort required is to remember to do it. Otherwise, this is a simple practice which reeps so many benefits and requires veru little effort.

Love yourself… or else (You are a Badass by Jen Sincero)

If you have already read my review of this book here, you will know that I love it.

The book holds plenty of practical applications for the self-help concepts which are discussed. And each set of practical application ends with a reminder to LOVE YOURSELF.

I enjoyed these constant reminders and also how it related to eacg chapter. Of course, within context, they have so much more impact but here they are:

LOVE YOURSELF… because it’s the Holy Grail of happiness

LOVE YOURSELF… no matter what anyone thinks

LOVE YOURSELF… like you’re the only you there is

LOVE YOURSELF… unless you have a better idea

LOVE YOURSELF… and the bluebirds of happiness will be your permanent backup singers

LOVE YOURSELF… and everyone benefits

LOVE YOURSELF… and be grateful for all you are and all you’re becoming

LOVE YOURSELF… you deserve it

LOVE YOURSELF… and life becomes a party

LOVE YOURSELF… more than you love your drama

LOVE YOURSELF… right now, wherever you’re at

LOVE YOURSELF… you’re doing an awesome job

LOVE YOURSELF… and you will be invincible

LOVE YOURSELF… fiercely, loyally, unapologetically

LOVE YOURSELF… you can do anything

LOVE YOURSELF… and you will have it all

LOVE YOURSELF… and the motherlode shall bestow her magic upon you

LOVE YOURSELF… with a kung fu grip

LOVE YOURSELF… you are a badass
